140 Ruggeri

Description

Rootstock deriving from the cross of Vitis vinifera cv, Resseguier n° 2 and Vitis rupestris cv. Lot. Today there are 10 different clones of this rootstock: 101, 200, 216, 217, 227, 229, 230, 265, 765 και 766.

Resistance to Soil Pests

140 Ru shows high resistance to the root form of phylloxera. It is also tolerant as rootstock to the nematodes Meloidogyne incognita and is sensitive to the nematodes Meloidogyne arenaria.

Adaptation

140 Ru is characterized by its good adaptation to limestone soils and its high tolerance to drought. Up to 60% tolerant to total calcium and 25% to active calcium and CCI * (see R 110) up to 90. It also absorbs magnesium from the soil quite well. It is particularly suitable for soils characterized as calcareous, dry, light, surface and stony.

Interaction with the implant and production targets

The robustness transmitted by 140 Ru is extremely high. This rootstock favours the vegetative growth and tends to "delay" the ripening of varieties. The combination with robust varieties such as Grenache N, Sauvignon B, Sultanina B, Ugni blanc B and especially Mourvedre N is not intended, except in special circumstances. The combination with the above varieties as well as with others such as Caladoc N, Carignan N, Marselan N, Savvatiano B, Tempranillo N, and Mandilaria N can cause problems such as large bulges and bumps at the graft site or poor adhesion. In this case, the vineyards might need replacement.

Specific multiplication properties

140 R has medium-length internodes and a fairly large diameter. The growth of node buds is moderate and wood production is low to moderate (25,000-60,000 meters / ha ). The good formation of the rootstock wood parts and then this wood should be kept in good storing conditions. The rooting capacity of 140 R grafts is low and its grafting capacity is moderate. Particular care should be taken both during stratification in the special chambers and in how the rooting hormone is administered, in order to avoid large swellings at the grafting site.

Parasite Resiliance

110 Ru is susceptible to the foliar form of phylloxera but holds a high degree of mildew tolerance.
