3309 C

Description

Rootstock deriving from the cross of Vitis and Vitis rupestris cv. Martin Today there are 8 different clones of this rootstock: 8, 111,143, 144, 147, 173, 188, 189.

Resistance to Soil Pests

The tolerance level of 3309 C to the root form of phylloxera is quite good. However, it is susceptible to the Meloidogyne arenaria and Meloidogyne incognita nematodes. It also shows some degree of tolerance to Agrobacterium Vitis.

Adaptation

3309 C is up to 20% tolerant to total calcium and and 11% tolerant to active calcium. It performs well in acidic soils. Its tolerance to iron chlorosis is low to moderate. 3309 C is moderately susceptible to water stress, particularly when this occurs abruptly during the germinal period. On the contrary, its adaptation to moisture is good. 3309 C easily absorbs magnesium from the soil but not potassium. This rootstock is extremely susceptible to chlorides and should be avoided when there is a risk of salinity. 3309 C is suitable for deep soils, sandy, clay, loamy soils with little or no calcium.

Interaction with the implant and production targets

3309 C generally shows close affinity to varieties. However, some adhesion problems have been reported with Cabernet Sauvignon M, Chenin L, Razaki L, Syrah M and especially with Sauvignon L. Some of the above varieties have, however, been grafted in large quantities with 3309 C. The speed of germination and fruit set provided by 3309 C is a bit slow. The robustness transmitted by 3309 C  is low to moderate and vegetative growth is balanced, especially if soil fertility is not very high. 3309 C promotes fruit set of susceptible varieties. The products obtained from grafted plants with this rootstock are particularly popular because of the recognized quality of the wine obtained, especially with varieties such as Cabernet Franc M, Cabernet Sauvignon M, Chardonnay L, Merlot M, Petit Manseng L, Pinot Noir M, Semillon L, Riesling L, Syrah M and Tannat M.

Specific multiplication properties

The length and diameter of the internodes are medium and average-sized, and the wood production (20,000-50,000 m / ha) is low to moderate, and sometimes a certain percentage of wood is dry. This rootstock presents very good rooting and adhesive ability in grafting

Parasite Resiliance

This subject is susceptible to the foliar form of phylloxera. It is also very susceptible to anthracnose but has a good degree of mildew tolerance.
